I LEFT Panamá with my master, Juan de Urquiza, on a frigate bound for the port of Paita, where he had a large cargo. On reaching the port of Manta we were caught in such a hurricane that we heeled over: those of us who could swim — myself, my master, and some others — got to shore, and the rest perished.
